Best of: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Christmas is just weeks away, and while I love holiday programming from How the Grinch Stole Christmas to Christmas Vacation, I enjoy the holiday commercials even more! This week, I'm reviving my post from last year, highlighting the best Christmas commercials the retail and food and beverage industries have to offer.

If you have additional ads you'd like to add to the list, drop me a line with the link so I can check it out! Thanks...and enjoy the holiday season!

While I love all the holiday specials on TV this time of year, I have to admit, there are some Christmas commercials that I wait all year to see. I get very excited to watch these spots and am sometimes happier to see these ads than hear Charlie-in-the Box sing about the Island of Misfit Toys or watch innocent Cindy Loo Who buy into lies from the Grinch. Here are some of my all time favorite holiday commercials:

Eat'n Park is a Pittsburgh area restaurant that's been around since 1949. In 1982, the company wanted to create a holiday card on video to thank the city for their support. The result was an ad that has become a Christmas classic and a holiday staple. This commercial is not just my favorite Christmas commercial, it's my favorite 30-second spot of all time! I hope you like it as much as I do.

Other Christmas commercials from food and beverage consumer packaged goods companies and retailers also do a phenomenal job of adding to the holiday season. Take a look:

Leave a comment and tell me: What are some of your favorite holiday commercials? I hope you get to see them this season! Happy holidays!

Leave a Peppermint Stick for Old St. Nick

Halloween is behind us and the holidays are just around the corner. Head into any grocery store, and you'll see the flavors of the season in full force. From peppermint to gingerbread, the quintessential tastes of Thanksgiving and Christmas are here. Check out these new products, around just for the holiday season.

Little Debbie Peppermint Swiss Rolls are the perfect Christmas treat. A twist on the snack cake's traditional chocolate cake roll, this pastry's crème filling adds a cool hint of peppermint.

Kellogg's doesn't let a holiday, season, or celebration go by without introducing a new Pop-Tart variety. This Christmas, the toaster pastry maker rolled out a limited edition Frosted Sugar Cookie selection, in addition to last year's popular Gingerbread treat.

Want to add a taste of the holidays to your hot cocoa or Rice Krispies treat? Try Kraft Jet-Puffed Gingerbread Mallows for a spiced up kick to your traditional holiday favorites.

Add new Country Crock Spreads to your Thanksgiving table. Available in Pumpkin Spice and Honey, the spreads are the perfect pairing for holiday breads, potatoes, baked goods, and more!

Running out of time to bake cookies for Santa? Look no further than Nestlé Toll House pre-made gingerbread cookie dough. Now available in tubes and tubs, you can make a family of gingerbread men, women, and kids in a fraction of the time.

Enjoy all your holiday cookies with a piping hot cup of coffee, and add the essence of the season with Coffee-mate's limited edition products, including Eggnog Latte, Gingerbread Latte, and Peppermint Mocha.

What are your favorite items to savor during the holiday season? Drop me a line and share your preferred Thanksgiving and/or Christmas indulgences!

Get Your Scare On

Halloween is so close! It's time to rent your scary movies, finalize your costume, and decide which candy you’ll be handing out to trick-or-treaters.

This year, 70 percent of Americans are expected to partake in Halloween activities, spending $53 on average for candy, decorations, and costumes. Halloween is the biggest non-gift giving holiday in the United States, with analysts forecasting overall product spending at $6.86 billion this season.

With 5 percent of all candy consumed for the year on Halloween and the week after, it's safe to say that a majority of that money will be spent on sweet treats. Again this year, retailers have stocked shelves with M&M's Candy Corn White Chocolate Candy, while new products are also creeping up. Just Born's Peeps line welcomed new seasonal items, including chocolate dipped orange marshmallow chicks and chocolate mousse-flavored marshmallow cats, in addition to offering standard marshmallow pumpkins and ghosts.

But which candy brands are the most popular and provide the most buzz? Recently, NetBase, a provider of social media insight and analysis, released a Halloween-themed Brand Passion Index to determine the emotions, opinions, and behaviors of six candy brands when it comes to chatter on social sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Among candy makers M&M's, Skittles, candy corn, Reese's, Tootsie Rolls, and SweeTarts, M&M's emerged as a leader with 42 percent of overall buzz. Skittles garnered 24 percent of social media buzz, but earned a "passion intensity" level of 89. Rounding out the list: Reese's – 21 percent of total buzz; Tootsie Rolls – 11 percent; and both SweeTarts and candy corn – less than 1 percent. When it came to passion intensity scores, though, SweeTarts scored high with 73; 65 for Tootsie Rolls; 48 for candy corn; and 45 for Reese's.

This Halloween, enjoy your favorite candies, spend what you'd like on treats, costumes, and decorations, and share your thoughts about the sweets you love on your preferred social media sites. Happy Halloween!

Eat, Drink, and be Scary

Only 12 days left to hit the supermarket, department stores, and warehouse retailers to fill up on the Halloween candy your neighborhood trick-or-treaters can't wait to get their hands on!

This year, I'm looking forward to a large number of youths visiting my door in their cute costumes, scary makeup, and creative get-ups to take advantage of this annual sweet tradition.

I'm torn, though, as to what to purchase for the kids on my block, and I'm curious to know what my readers think are the best Halloween candies. Take a moment and make your voice heard!

Shana Tova

The High Holidays are upon us! Jews around the world are currently observing the "Days of Awe," the ten days between Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

These High Holy Days are a a time of introspection, a time to atone and repent, and a time to make plans for personal improvement in the coming year. The beginning and end of the holidays are marked by what else - food!

To welcome the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah meals usually include apples and honey, symbolizing a sweet new year. While Yom Kippur concludes with a fast to focus solely on spiritual well-being, the fast is often broken with a traditional Jewish feast to mark the profound experience. Kugel, chopped liver, and honey cake are just some of the customary recipes enjoyed on these holidays.

In accordance to Jewish religious dietary laws, most Jews respect a kosher lifestyle. Products certified as Kosher Dairy or Kosher Parve are marked with appropriate symbols on packaging. As the nation's largest manufacturer of processed kosher food products, The Manischewitz Company is probably the best known brand name in this category. Macabee Foods is another popular kosher brand.

In recent years, numerous eateries have added kosher supervision to their establishments. Dunkin' Donuts and Subway are just two examples of casual restaurants that have expanded their offerings in Jewish neighborhoods to better serve the community.

Whether you keep kosher or not, it's always fun to try new foods that embrace the Jewish culture, and there's no better time than now to enjoy these customary dishes. Please share your favorite ethnic recipe or the best Jewish meal you've tried. Shana Tova - Happy New Year!

Easter's On Its Way

We're just days away from Easter, and for weeks now, holiday candy has been lining store shelves. Favorites including Peeps, jellybeans, and chocolates shaped like bunnies and eggs are ready for baskets for children of all ages.

The National Confectioners Association says Easter is the second top-selling confectionery holiday behind only Halloween, with 90 million chocolate bunnies and 16 billion jellybeans made each year, just for Easter. With so much candy produced for the holiday, it's no wonder that Easter sweets and treats are used for more than filling baskets.

Every year, two newspapers, The Washington Post and the St. Paul Pioneer Press, host Peeps diorama contests. Entrants depict scenes from pop culture, movies, and significant events in the past year, all starring Peeps. Year after year, the winners from both papers are clever, cute, and creative.

Washington Post Winners:

Pioneer Press Winners:

If you were to line all the Easter jellybeans end to end, they would circle the globe nearly three times. If you think that's too much sugary goodness to eat, you're not alone, which is why perhaps the most famous jellybean maker, Jelly Belly found another use for its flavorful candies – murals. Try creating a mural of your family in their Easter bonnets this Sunday.

Finally, The Hershey Company is synonymous with Easter, distributing pastel-wrapped Kisses and Cadbury Crème Eggs on behalf of the Easter Bunny. If you've eaten enough candy, however, the company has craft ideas to help you celebrate the holiday and decorate your home in style.

What creative uses for Easter candy have you seen? Leave a message to tell me more, and "hoppy" Easter!

Love is in the Air

February is here, which means Valentine's Day is just around the corner! On February 14, what gifts will you give to the ones that you love? The National Confectioners Association says that more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine's Day. Manufacturers are ramping up production and introducing new candies for this year's holiday. Take a look at the new sweets you can give to your sweet this Valentine's Day.

The Hershey Company hopes your family and friends enjoy chocolate, dressing up its classic favorites in festive red and pink foils and decorated Valentine's Day-themed heart boxes. In addition to original, almond, and caramel Kisses you'll also find special dark mildly sweet and cherry cordial crème Kisses this season.

If your significant other prefers pure sugary goodness over chocolate, Just Born rolled out two new products in time for February 14. Look for Mike and Ike Passion Mix and new Hot Tamales Untamed Love Mix in the candy aisle.

For students and teachers looking for an alternative to the tried and true Valentine's cards, retailers are stocking Kellogg's Pop-Tarts Mini Crisps bags, perfect for classroom exchanges.

New research holds good news for stores selling Valentine's Day goods: Industry research firm IBISWorld forecasts spending for the holiday will top $18.6 billion, a 5.8 percent jump over last year's sales.

Time will tell if these projections will hold true. In the meantime, take a moment to vote and tell me what you plan to buy for your Valentine this year!

Holiday Flavors Abound

With Christmas only days away, food and beverage consumer packaged goods companies are getting into the holiday spirit. With special seasonal flavors, Santa-clad packaging, and brightly colored red and green foods, one only has to look at the products lining store shelves to know that the Christmas season is upon us. Here are some of the new items you can expect to see (if you haven't already) at a supermarket near you.

Several weeks ago, Dunkin' Donuts unveiled a line of seasonal coffee flavors. If you're excited about waking up to a bold cup of Pumpkin Spice, Vanilla Nut, or Mocha Mint coffee every morning leading up Christmas, you're in luck! The at-home coffee brand is available in grocery stores for a limited time.

To make your morning even more merry and bright, try Kellogg's Rice Krispies with festive red and green crisped pieces of rice mixed in among the usual cream-colored cereal bits.

PopTarts is also celebrating the holiday season with a familiar flavor. Find limited edition Kellogg's Printed Fun Pop-Tarts Gingerbread toaster pastries at a store near you.

If all you want for Christmas is a sweet treat, look to red and green M&M's in all varieties – plain, peanut, peanut butter, dark chocolate, and almond, in addition to seasonal mint and cherry cordial flavors. Taking full advantage of this winter wonderland, Hershey's offers a range of seasonal taste sensations in flavors like Dark Chocolate Mint Truffle, Milk Chocolate with Cherry Cordial Crème, and Candy Cane. New this year, Peeps has also added Chocolate Covered Mint Flavored Marshmallow Trees to its line-up.

Oreo is celebrating this holly jolly season with Candy Cane Oreos. As a twist to this classic favorite, the chocolate sandwich cookie has added a peppermint crème with crunchy sprinkles to its icing middle. A perfect snack to leave for Santa!

'Tis the season for companies to dress up the packaging on year-round staples. Take the Nestlé Crunch bar, for example. This year, the candy company collaborated with Paul Frank to create holiday-themed designs featuring the characters Julius the Money and Worry Bear. The oversized bars, available exclusively at Target, come in gift envelopes that double as holiday cards.

Those in the mood for a healthy bite to eat this season can get a boost of calcium from Target's line of holiday yogurt. With flavors like sugar cookie, bread pudding, and eggnog, consumers can savor the most recognizable tastes of the season in yogurt form.

For me, I know the season has begun when Starbucks breaks out its red cups. Is there anything better than the Christmas Coffee Blend or a Peppermint Mocha in a red cup to say happy holidays?!

What about you? What new products have you seen this year? If you have a favorite holiday product that you can only find this time of year, please share! Leave a comment and tell me all about the seasonal flavors you love.

Thanksgiving Traditions

Thursday is one of the most anticipated days of the year – Thanksgiving! From turkey and football to parades and Black Friday planning, Thanksgiving is a wonderful day to catch up on cooking, relaxing, and taking in the sights and sounds of the holiday.

The day starts off with Macy's 84th Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year, spectators will see floats from many companies, including consumer packaged goods giants Jimmy Dean, Morton Salt, and Ocean Spray, in addition to a Pillsbury Doughboy giant balloon. The event would not be complete without a visit from Santa to kick off the Christmas season!

While the turkey is in the oven, cooks can take comfort from knowing that should any problems arise, the Turkey Talk Line from Butterball is just a phone call away. The toll-free number is 29 years old, and open through December to answer your turkey questions. Want to know which turkey pan to use; what do when your turkey is on fire, or when to put your turkey in the oven so it's ready by the end of the game? Just dial 1-800-BUTTERBALL!

Of course, while the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions take over your TV, you can spread out your newspaper ads and plan your Black Friday shopping spree.

How do you spend your Thanksgiving? Leave a message and share your turkey day traditions!

Trick-Or-Treat

Halloween – what a wonderful time of year! Adults and kids alike have every reason to love this holiday. From dressing up like your favorite superhero (without getting weird looks) to an abundance of candy on store shelves and door-to-door, everyone can get into the Halloween spirit. This year, you might notice some new candy options at your local supermarket or in your treat bag with an update from your favorite sweet companies.

If you're a fan of marshmallow Peeps at Easter, you have another reason to love them at Halloween. This year, the Just Born candy company added new, individually wrapped, milk chocolate covered pumpkins to its line-up.

This time of year, Willy Wonka brings out his "Spooky Nerds." The orange and fruit punch flavored sugar bits are packaged in boxes adorned with devil and ghost dressed Nerds. Cute and delicious!

The Hershey Company also gets into the Halloween mood with limited-time Hershey's Kisses in flavors like Candy Corn and Pumpkin Spice.

If you're more of a salty snack eater, you're in luck! This year, Frito-Lay rolled out Cheetos Mighty Zingers in crazy cheddar and wicked picante flavor.

Last year, Frito-Lay's parent company offered special Pepsi Halloween cans to recognize this scary time of year.

As the highest-grossing holiday of the year for the candy industry, you can bet that new sweets will be added to grocery shelves year after year. What new Halloween treats have you noticed this season?

How Sweet

Have you heard about Sweetest Day? Each year, it's celebrated on the third Saturday of October, which would make tomorrow the big day. Sweetest Day was founded in 1922 by Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio, candy company employee. Birch wanted to bring happiness to those less fortunate by sending them candy and small gifts to brighten their day. Today, the holiday has evolved to a time where friends and loved ones can show their appreciation, and I want to share some sweet recipes with you to make for the special people in your family, using the CPG products in your kitchen cabinet.

For breakfast, try your hand at Honey Vanilla Crème Stuffed French Toast featuring Coffee-mate, or Southwest Benedict Fritos Pie.

If dinner is your specialty, test one of these appetizing ideas:If you're short on time, perhaps you can prepare a pitcher of Smucker's Heat Wave Punch or a side dish like Apple Coleslaw featuring Nestlé Juicy Juice.

What would Sweetest Day be without dessert? Attempt an after-dinner treat like Big Red Heinz Ketchup Cake, Hershey's Hugs & Kisses Crescents, or Mini No-Bake Twinkie Cheesecakes.

Bon appétit!

Be sweet to your loved ones and whip up one of these recipes this weekend! Please, share your tasty recipes that use common CPG products for unique dishes in the comments section.

Holiday Food Traditions

Starting tonight at sundown, Jews around the world will observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, with prayer and fasting. At the end of the holiday, it is tradition to break the fast with a family meal.

Have you ever noticed how important food can be to a holiday? Often times, it manages to take center stage and overshadow the day at hand; however, what is a holiday if you can’t enjoy it with family and food?

Whether you have to have a certain food for your birthday dinner or a specific brand of ham or turkey for your Easter, Thanksgiving (Butterball!), or Christmas holiday, it's food that makes or breaks your celebration.

Today, I'd love to hear about what foods and brands have to be on your table for important holidays, festivities, and gatherings. Tell me about your family traditions and the foods they involve by leaving a comment below.

It's Your Day, Food

Did you know that today is National Root Beer Float Day? While A&W Root Beer and Edy's Grand Ice Cream might jump at the chance to honor the marriage of root beer and ice cream, it seems like every day honors some provision within the food chain.

The year kicks off with National Spaghetti Day, January 4 (not to be confused with National Pasta Day on October 17). January is also National Soup Month, which Campbell's Soup warmly welcomes in the cold winter season.

In February, Del Monte is just one CPG company that is pleased to ring in National Canned Food Month, celebrating "the nutrition, convenience, and great taste that canned food provides for today's busy consumers."

March holidays include National Cereal Day on the 7th, which is loosely tied to the anniversary of the invention of Kellogg's corn flakes. Frito-Lay can ring in National Chip and Dip Day on the 23rd.

Moving into spring, April brings National Soft Pretzel Month, Chinese Almond Cookie Day on April 9, and Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day on April 12, sure to bring smiles to the employees at Kraft.

In May, you'll find National Egg Month, which according to the American Egg Board, is when egg sales are the slowest. June brings National Iced Tea Month and National Onion Ring Day on June 22.

Summer foods reign supreme in July with National Baked Bean Month (can you say Bush's?), National Hot Dog Day the third Wednesday of the month, and National Ice Cream Day, July 19. The first Saturday in August is always National Mustard Day and ends with National Trail Mix Day on August 31.

As fall approaches, September lends itself to National Potato Month, National Guacamole Day on the 16th, and National Coffee Day, September 29. October marks National Caramel Month, National School Lunch Week (the second week of the month), and National Candy Corn Day, October 30.

As the year comes to an end, November brings about National Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine Day on the 19th (drink up that Mountain Dew!), and National Cake Day, November 26. It's only fitting that December has been deemed National Egg Nog and National Fruit Cake Month. Did you know that Christmas Day is National Pumpkin Pie Day, and December 26 is National Candy Cane Day? To ring in the New Year, it's also appropriate that December 31 has been named National Champagne Day.

For a complete list of wacky and wild U.S. celebrations revolving around food every day, week, and month of the year, check out this website.

Do you pay attention to these food holidays? I would love to hear stories about public relations promotions or events that take place on these days. Please, share your articles in the comment section!

Let Freedom Ring

We are two days away from the Fourth of July, and while the holiday is celebrated with barbecues, picnics, and family, it is also important to take a moment to remember those serving in the armed forces who have allowed us to enjoy our freedoms. Retailers and food and beverage consumer packaged goods companies have worked to keep soldiers top of mind by recognizing them not only today, but also throughout the year.

The Coca-Cola Company has been a longtime supporter of the United Service Organizations, or USO, the association that connects the American people with the U.S. military. As a founding corporate partner, Coke has provided philanthropic and promotional support to create awareness of the USO's mission. In addition, Anheuser-Busch serves as a Worldwide Awareness Partner of the USO, and JCPenney has also donated generously to the USO.

Target is another company actively supporting the military community. Its many programs include United Through Reading, which allows deployed parents to read books aloud on DVD, then send the recording to their children at home; Our Military Kids, a program designed to aid the children of severely injured service members by providing them with grants to participate in sports, fine arts, or tutoring; and Operation Gratitude, where Target employees voluntarily assemble care packages for troops overseas.

In 2009, Sears Holdings created a partnership with Rebuilding Together to assist military families facing hardship called Heroes at Home. The volunteer home rehabilitation organization assists homeowners with completing home repairs and other household improvements. Recently, The Hershey Company joined in the effort by producing limited edition Hershey's Kisses that feature a patriotic theme for sale exclusively at Kmart stores. You can also visit the Heroes at Home website to send an encouraging message to our troops.

Kraft Foods is another company with a long history of military support. During WWII, Kraft developed portable food for soldiers, called "K-rations." Today, Kraft's Oscar Mayer brand provides troops with hot dogs, deli meats, and smiles by bringing its products and Wienermobile to military cafeterias, bases, and commissaries around the world.

Finally, Very Best Baking, the recipe website behind the brands of Nestle Toll House, Carnation, and Libby's, offers sound tips in sending goodies to military men and women serving overseas. Visit the site to learn what and how bakers can send treats to the Middle East.

What other companies offer programs to support our armed forces? Please leave your comments and tell me more. Have a safe and happy Independence Day!

Here Comes Summer

Monday is Memorial Day, which means summer is just around the corner. For me, summer means picnics, cookouts, barbecues, and bonfires, and all the yummy goodness that goes along with such outings. Certain foods scream summer, and here are the ones I'm looking forward to once again this season.

A favorite hot weather treat that takes me back to childhood is the Firecracker. The red, white, and blue popsicles help to alleviate the heat and humidity of June, July, and August days.

There is nothing like a steak fresh from the grill. My husband spices up sirloin with McCormick's Garlic Pepper Seasoning Grinder, which adds just the right amount of seasoning on a hot summer's night.

Several years ago, a friend introduced me to the wonders of salt and pepper potato chips at a company picnic. I was instantly hooked and now associate the chips with a cool summer breeze.

No summer is complete without s'mores. The roasted marshmallow, melted chocolate, graham cracker combo is the perfect end to an evening around the campfire.

What are your favorite foods to eat in the summer? Take a moment out of your long weekend to tell me about your summer snack preferences!
